  • James McLindon: Top Shelf Tolstoy

Saw this play in a festival and loved it. It's a delightful play, full of small surprises, wit and compassion, and more than the sum of its parts. An idea that could have been a mere skit becomes much more, a play, with complicated and unpredictable characters. Deserves a lot of productions. Well done.

Public libraries are under siege, and Maximillian Gill has the perfect antidote for the funding crisis. . . alcohol! Top Shelf Tolstoy is a skillful, timely, and wonderfully clever satire that serves up shot after shot of laughs and plenty of post-show food for thought. I had the pleasure of seeing the cocktails served up live and am still chuckling days after. Bravo!

This is so clever, and likely to happen in future towns, to be honest. But who am I to judge what someone finds a classic, be it Tolstoy or a classic 'Tini! Both are valid choices.

Unique and absurd. This is a play that is able to laugh at the state of the world

A great satire. Like the best 10-minute plays, it takes an absurd idea and runs with it. A well-constructed three-hander with effortless exchanges, the promise of good stage spectacle via some terrible dancing, and a perfect final line. As a side note, my town actually has a bar called "The Library," though they don't check out books (yet.)

A fun play about a library that serves up liquor instead of the classics. I loved the line from one of the library employees, "None of my business if you want to load up early." It made me laugh! Max Gill has done well with a bookish theme.

Oh my gosh, I love this. A woman goes to her local library to get a library card and discovers that the library now has a full bar as a way to raise money - and fewer books. So much fun! Smart and fast and so engaging, this would be an audience favorite in any evening of short plays.

This sharp ten-minute satire says so much about the way we live now because, despite its slightly absurd setup, it is so disturbingly plausible. Laugh till you cry and then pour yourself a stiff one. Bravo, Maximillian Gill. Shelve this one under classics.

Max Gill shows us his mastery of the short comic form with this sparkling piece that imagines a library that makes up its budget shortfall by converting into a full-service bar, that has everything you'd ever want... except books. Always fun to dip in to Max's work, and this kept up a very long streak of excellence.
