Playwright Steven G. Martin had me at the title...the play itself is the icing on the cake - no - between the cookie! I've never related to a play more. Playwright Martin looks with unflinching honesty and compassion at food addiction, with a healthy dose of humor on the side. I found myself wishing I could be the actor so I could eat 38 cookies at every performance! Kudos on a well-crafted play that never crumbles.

A great list solo piece. The rhythm is wonderful. Love the excess and restraint.

Oh I feel very seen with this one. Wonderful writing, Steven. I really enjoyed this monologue and think it's extremely dynamic and so relatable. I want to produce a night of short monologues just to see this! Awesome, awesome monologue.

  • Adam Richter: 38 Cookies, 39 Reasons [a monologue]

With his usual economy of words, Steven Martin gives us a searing indictment of our dysfunctional relationship with food and body image. The staging is so simple yet brilliant, making Terry's journey through the package of cookies that much more compelling. Anyone who's wrestled with themselves over eating — therefore everyone — will relate to this play. Bravo!

Wow. Just wow. This is a striking, powerful, and vivid play, beautifully written and thoughtfully crafted. Every once in a while you find a script that makes you think: “this says something that absolutely needed to be said, but I didn’t know how it could be said until this moment… and this is how.” This is that script. Read it, publish it, produce it. I’d definitely love to see this performed.

This is a very wonderfully crafted script. I love how you show the what and why an overweight person may eat that cookie . Well there are 39 reasons why and IT IS NOBODY'S DAMN BUSINESS. Thank you Steven for writing this script to give support to those who feel they don't have to give anyone a reason for being the size they are. I found the main point is you don't have to feel guilty about eating that cookie. Just let people be and don't try to make them the way others think they should be.

For every overweight person who’s been looked at askance, been asked “should you really be eating that?” or has been given unsolicited dieting advice, Martin has provided us with an extensive menu where the cuisine is “fuck you!” And it is delicious!

With clear and present anger, he artfully addresses how fat- and body-shaming is a socially acceptable and encouraged form of bullying. And he and we have had it!

Now let’s share a box of Nilla Wafers like it’s nobody’s damn business because it isn’t!

Powerful and theatrical play, and so creative! And with so much to say. I would love to see this performed.
