  • Vivian Lermond: 38 Cookies, 39 Reasons [a monologue]

We have all been there - victimized by our stressful lives and finding solace in gobbling up a big pack of cookies. With a smooth hand. Martin treats us to a mirrored image of some of our own food demons, and he does it with delicious panache.

Yes to this play. All of the pain and shame associated with overeating, a great epidemic worldwide, is covered flawlessly. Fantastic work.

Always expect the unexpected from Martin and this monologue delivers so much humor and self reflection. Terry speaks for all of us who feel that we owe an explanation for just living and just trying to make our way in this crazy mixed up world. I would love to grab a bag of nutter butters and enjoy the bag with Terry and reflect how good it is just to be alive and indulge every once in awhile.

  • Ryan M. Bultrowicz: 38 Cookies, 39 Reasons [a monologue]

Though seemingly simple with its formula, this play is incredibly creative. It’s thirty-nine quick flash emotion invoking photographs. Truthful in each and every line this play is as impactful as it is impressive! Read and produce it, for the love of Pete.

Ouch. This play speaks to me in the most uncomfortable ways. It is simple and powerful. Wonderful twist at the end that gives us hope. Well done!

  • Emily McClain: 38 Cookies, 39 Reasons [a monologue]

Wow! I was so impacted by this play! The premise is simple: an actor consumes almost an entire package of cookies while listing specific reasons why they eat. And yet beyond that simple idea hides the truth of our relationship with food: taking pleasure from food, comfort, solace, or soothing a part of ourselves that never seems to be "full." It's darkly comedic but so incredibly meaningful. In the monologue's final, powerful image we see a person in defiance of society's expectations as well as embracing the complex relationship we have with food and with our bodies. Excellent work!

i could probably give you 39 Powerful Reasons to take this play from page to stage. We've all been judged on our relationship to our food and bodies, but it often goes unsaid. The elephant in the room that keeps us from really seeing each other. Not so in this play. Steven lays it all out for us and forces us to confront the humanity behind bingeing. No cookie is an island.

So many of us have problems with food (moi included). We watch this monologue with a kind of fascinated horror as the performer goes through literally 38 large cookies in under 10 minutes, giving entirely contradictory reasons for the bingeing but appearing to leave the main underlying reasons unsaid. Please do not cast an actor with diabetes in the role.

This play stings because it's so honest. It perfectly captures the reasons for overeating, in that sometimes, there is a reason, and sometimes there isn't, and it's something people do and we need to be able to talk about it instead of just shoving it down with milk. I mean, shame. Fantastic work by a great playwright.
