  • Joe Swenson: Good Grief

The final installment in the series, Philip Middleton Williams takes you on an unexpected journey. In this final chapter of Clyde and Dan's relationship, he introduces an emotion/event/situation as a character. Grief announces themselves as a necessary part of the relationship between son and father but declares that he's there for the son in an unexpected way.

Philip takes us on this journey of discovery, relationships, and has us rooting for Dan all along the way. Beautifully done. Expert dialogue. I'm rooting for Philip's brilliance and can't wait to read/see more!

  • D. Lee Miller: Good Grief

GOOD GRIEF by Philip Middleton Williams is a great addition to his already wonderful growing oeuvre. Williams shines a light on Dan's grief that manages to beautifully convey the underside -- in this case, not the darkness but the light. As pain is necessary to warn you of an illness, so does grief have its positive and negative sides. This is a beautiful and hopeful play in the context of the pain all humans share.

  • Jack Levine: Good Grief

PHILIP MIDDLETON WILLIAMS’ play, “Good Grief”, gives a whole new meaning of what grief means in the process of dealing with tragedies in our life. This short play had a big impact on me, as I began to think back to when I experienced grief from the loss of a loved one. This is truly a beautiful play of how grief plays a vital role, one with a positive impact under horrible circumstances.

When t comes to grief, we all have our own coping skills. Williams taps into our universal memories of loss and delivers us all to a healing place. A poignant play that resonates!

  • Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn: Good Grief

I got a good kind of sad reading this play. And I think that's what it was supposed to do. Remind you that when someone leaves, their memories WILL make you sad. But that's okay, it's better than not remembering at all. We need to learn to embrace our grief, let it be our partner, not our master. What a beautiful and magical way to deal with loss.

  • Adam Richter: Good Grief

Philip Middleton Williams writes so eloquently and beautifully about grief that this play feels both new and timeless at the same time. Grief is not something you go through, like a rite of passage; it's a companion that stays with you forever. I also love the complex yet utterly real way he writes about fathers and sons, and how that bond never vanishes, not even in death.

  • Cayson Miles: Good Grief

Sweet, touching, sad, and ultimately, heartfelt. Williams creates such a compelling depiction of grief in order to discuss how we deal with the subject in our lives, be it the good or the bad. Williams uses this concept to create a beautiful dialogue with a conclusion that feels pitch perfect. Great work.

  • John Mabey: Good Grief

Philip Middleton Williams has crafted such a beautiful play about grief and the ways we cope. The characters all have such rich histories and Philip delivers the perfect amount of background to make the action both compelling and dynamic. Never before have I read a play that wrestled with themes of death and loss but left me feeling so open and hopeful.

Poignant and charming, this look at how some people deal with grief is told in a very beautiful way. Philip takes an uncomfortable subject and gives us a way to embrace it. I really enjoyed this take.

What a clever concept created by Williams to explore the possible benefits of grief. I enjoyed the writing and the conceit that grief can be as beautiful or as ugly as the survivors want it to be. In this case, beauty kind of wins out...an enjoyable short play worth reading.
