  • Austin Hendricks: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

A play that both makes me want so much more, and want so much less. A powerful example of the struggles queer people go through when trying to balance faith, the words of others, and who they are. Martin is a master of nuance in this intense, quick play.

Steven G. Martin is a true artist. He has created a number of short plays that absolutely capture the audience and make us feel something important in as little as one minute. Pure brilliance. I would love to see an entire evening of his work on a stage.

  • Jeffrey James Keyes: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

This is one of the most powerful and (as a queer man who grew up Catholic) completely relatable scripts about faith I've read in a long time. It's short, intense, and completely gripping. Steven G. Martin is a master! Excellent work.

  • Joe Swenson: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

From the moment you start reading this, you realize that there is a lot at stake. Steven does a wonderful job of infusing confusion into the human element. In a relatively short period of time, Steven takes you on a journey of Godliness into abandonment and gives Hugh a layered complexity that you rarely see in 1 minute pieces. Outstanding job!

  • Claudia Haas: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

From the astonishing description of Hugh’s bible right through the speedy prayer, Martin gives us an adolescent in turmoil and pain in a scant 10 seconds. Don’t be fooled by the brevity of the pice. There’s a lot at stake here.

  • D. Lee Miller: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

Steven Martin presents an immediate crisis in faith that is life-altering and maybe shattering - all in a matter of a minute. Sharp and to the point, extremely well done.

  • Martha Patterson: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

Hugh, clutching a well-worn Bible, needs to know if God really loves him - a touching, very short script about insecurity with the Divine.

  • Dan Taube: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

Fascinating character whose struggles are visceral and wholly believable. Martin does a great job of really pulling us into the characters head in a short period of time. An almost perfect monologue. Highly recommended.

  • Scott Sickles: ABANDONMENT [A 1-MINUTE MONOLOGUE]

One of the most astonishing depictions of a crisis of faith I’ve ever seen and Martin fits it on half a page! Unrequited love is terrible enough but when the One doing the rebuffing is supposed to be both all-powerful and all-loving, the paradox become untenable. Hugh’s love and anguish are at war and the stakes are as high sad heaven itself. A triumph!

What can happen in a minute? Read Abandonment to find out! This 1-minute-play is an entire experience in only 1 minute and can be interpreted in so many ways for any kind of actor especially written for LGBTQ people who struggle so terribly with our place on this earth. It also makes me wonder who is doing the abandoning? Society seems to have struck the first and many blows to inspire what Hugh does. Beautiful work.
