←Recommendations of Save Hamlet! (a full length play)

I produced this full length SAVE HAMLET at The Laboratory Theater of Florida and almost a month of performances had the same responses from our audiences: FUN! Smart! Clever! Levine uses slapstick, meta commentary on the play, Shakespearean-style verse, all while following the familiar story of Hamlet to deliver an incredibly fun night of theater, whether you know Hamlet inside and out or not. Highly recommend this show for middle schools, high schools, community theaters.

Long story short, Levine had me giggling from page one. Even the stage directions are hysterical. Females in male roles --great fun, especially when Bernadette, Marcella and Horatia jump in to "help", the balance between action, humor and poetry... Good thing Mark Harvey Levine was "writing this stuff down!"

This fun retelling of Hamlet is genius! Calling out famous quotes and wreaking havoc on this normally dark tragedy in the best possible way. Teens and young adults will love being in this wisecracking, silly, and insightfully funny rollercoaster ride. And audiences will have side aches from laughing so hard. A real gem!

What a HOOT. Educational, silly, but also wise! This was made to be produced at every University theater company in America, or done in Rep with Hamlet. Imagine the Marx brothers were sisters who all had a crush on a Goth Hamlet and conspired to — I can’t explain this one, I can only demand you produce it!

Brilliant, just brilliant. Artfully follows the structure of Hamlet, only to subvert every scene and to wreak havoc with the politics of gender. The dialogue is hilarious, mixing verse, anachronisms, and meta commentary. I honestly can't count the number of times I laughed out loud. This would be a joy to see staged.

This play is a delight! A lot of women are disguised as the male supporting roles in "Hamlet" so they can take charge and prevent everyone from ending up dead at the end. From the comments lovingly poking fun at Shakespeare's language to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern trying to shriek their way through a giant pool noodle fight, this is a hilarious love letter to Hamlet.

Save Hamlet! is a full-on hoot. If the enemy of Shakespeare is Bardolatry, then Hamlet is its sacred cow. Save Hamlet! makes some fun burgers from that sacred cow, poking continuous fun at archaic language, poor decision making on the part of the characters, and, GASP, details not well planned out by Shakespeare. Of particular fun is the exhortation to exit and avoid a bear. Good fun!

As someone with a very extensive background in Shakespeare, I have a very high bar for Shakespearean adaptations. And to me, SAVE HAMLET! is a perfect Shakespearean adaptation!

This play is ideal for High School students, and both irreverently pokes fun at Shakespeare's play and takes great care to teach actors and audience the history of this play. This play is great for a largely female cast, as we quickly discover that almost all of the men in Elsinore are actually women in disguise!

SAVE HAMLET! works as a great companion piece to it's source material! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A fantastically fun play, perfect for youth actors! I had the pleasure of reading Horatia and so enjoyed it. Teachers and directors need to add this play to their reading lists (and seasons!) immediately!
