There's a darkness, even a privilege, to apathy, but sometimes we have to take refuge in it to avoid breaking. Lam's play brings cathartic hilarity to that idea, giving us a 2020 in which one more very unique thing happens, and a pair of characters who react with a "yeah, I guess this might as well happen. I should probably adjust accordingly." Casually horrific and funny as hell, this is easily the best satire of the previous year I've seen. Well done.

What a play! What a year! Even if you have no interest in "pandemic plays" check out THIS YEAR. Set in L.A. during the wildfires and pandemic, Greg Lam shows us how truly bizarre our lives have become and how we have all adjusted to going about our daily lives while the world falls apart around us. The dry humor of this play captures 2020 perfectly. It includes stellar lines such as "if I survive this but my car gets trashed I’ll be pissed."

This play would work on Zoom, on stage, or as a radio play. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The trauma-exhaustion of 2020 is explored in this really hilarious 10 minute 2-hander. I felt so seen in the characters, like the world-weary hero of this dystopian horror who is still expected to file their TPS reports on time. Lam satirizes our current world so well, but with just enough softness to the edge to make it funny. Wonderful work!

This may be the perfect comic play that shows just how much everyone is over apocalyptic events and headlines. Dark comedy done oh so well.

What I love about Greg Lam's "This Year" is the characters' tone. World weariness and apathy are hilarious points of view to take in what really is a horrific situation. With everything else piled on, what more can we ask from our protagonists beside a tired sigh?

Credit Greg Lam's excellent dialogue. Audiences are going to laugh out loud with glee as the characters roll their eyes, groan with annoyance, and shrug throughout.

  • Dominica Plummer: This Year

A highly topical pandemic play that is just right for actors during lockdown. Lam's ingenious drama places a boss and an employee in their respective cars on the way to work in California. They find themselves battling traffic, COVID, wildfires, a lack of protective gear and the politics of an unfriendly workplace that won't let them work from home. To make matters worse, this hapless and unlucky pair find they have one more obstacle to work around before they reach the comparative safety of the office. This short play has drama, suspense and a lot of wry humor. Recommended!

Many of us spent 2020 lamenting the myriad woes we had to contend with and wondering why we were still expected to continue to show up to work and pay bills on time in the midst of it all. With "This Year," Greg Lam takes the disaster(s) of 2020 and adds *just* one more little problem. Darkly funny and easy to produce no matter the venue. Highly recommended!
