This is a beautiful play about two strangers who find each other when they need each other most. Ken builds a relationship between these two rather quickly, but keeps the dialogue believable and honest. And he connects the characters with little revelations along the way leading to a heartfelt ending. Everyone needs their whole picture person.

This play hit me harder than I expected to at first. The surprising connection between Ellie and Alex hit me hard. And then filled me with relief that they found each other at just the right moment. We all need someone to be our whole picture person. Just a lovely piece about kindred spirits, lifting each other up when the world feels heaviest.

A moving play - all the feels here - that helps us all process the difficulties of grief and loss through two young characters who are both working their ways through loss. It is great to see how strangers can reach out to each other and connect and leaves me with a feeling of hope. I also love how their characters' specific needs cause them to work at making this connection so that they don't walk away before it's solid. Well done.

An unintended meet up at a funeral turns out to be just what Ellie and Alex need. It's funny. It's painful. But there's hope on the horizon.

The natural wit in the dialogue is immediately engaging in this short piece. Just as compelling is the human connection the two characters make by the close, one that is effortlessly accomplished through subtle changes in emotional registers, organic to the situation, and ultimately deeply affecting. A fine piece by Preuss filled with assured writing and meaningful moments of pain and compassion that provides a perfect showcase for two committed actors.

"A Benevolent Alliance of Mourners" is definitely Ken Preuss at his very best. The conversation between these two unlikely people is so authentic, heartfelt, humorous and touching. A powerfully moving piece that needs to be out in the world!

Ellie is a funeral singer and Daniel lost his friend, both connecting unexpectedly but recognizing in the other a certain kind of pain. And as each takes the risk of opening-up and sharing what's been hidden away, they find so much more than they ever expected. A powerful piece that should be performed again and again.
