With some plays, an audience will know the ending in advance; the fun comes in discovering how the characters will get there. That's the case with Philip Middleton Williams' short, romantic fantasy/drama "Going There" -- and Williams delivers the goods with his skill. The characters are terrific as is the plotting. The theatricality of this play is high, and it's easily produced.

It's funny how an entire lifetime can change in a moment with what seems like a small decision, and Philip Middleton Williams has illustrated this idea in just ten minutes. What I appreciate about this ten-minute two-hander is how Philip handled the ambitious time-jumping on stage between four unique scenes with cinematic ease--it made the screenwriter in me smile. Another well-written triumph in the Philip Middleton Williams collection. My only question left is: which of their futures is real? (and I think that was the entire point!)

So much sweet and heart achingly beautiful nostalgia and love in this very short play. Sam and Gary have are a great pair...in any of the sliding door-like timelines. I can't believe how much love, hope and honestly, familiarity is in this short play...and it doesn't feel over-packed. It's the perfect amount of baggage for this little journey we take with these two characters.

Life is a series of tiny little decisions that have ripple effects through the rest of our lives. Philip Middleton Williams' short play "Going There" demonstrates this with such wit and skill. Sam and Gary have a complex relationship that's completely believable in both timelines. I am always amazed by the author's ability to tell so much in so few pages, and "Going There" is another gem.

PHILIP MIDDLETON WILLIAMS never disappoints. His plays are always interesting and well worth reading and watching. “Going There” is a beautiful piece of love gained, love lost, and love regained. It is a heartfelt piece, which I loved reading. We all should do what we really feel in our heart rather than what we think others may want us to do.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda… But what if…???

As someone who writes variations of the nerd/jock dynamic, I found this take on it quite cozy. Sam and Gary are instantly identifiable, not because they’re archetypes but because of how Williams draws them as people. Their history together and histories as individuals ring true, and we root for them as human beings who care deeply for each other.

After a while, “what if?” can become “if only,” then maybe “why not?” GOING THERE is filled with yearning and hope.

  • Sasha Karuc: Going There

It’s difficult not to pick at missed opportunities, moments where the path forked and we feel we went the wrong way. It’s especially true when we are ruled by fear or indecision. We can’t help but wonder what if.

Philip Middleton Williams’s GOING THERE beautifully weaves together a few moments in time and shows how even small decisions have a ripple effect on us. Things change. We grow into ourselves. This play captures a quiet yearning among two people who see possibilities of what might have been unfold in front of them.

Working through time and space, and the possibilities that come to us. This little play expertly weaves about through both your expectations and your sense of wonder, and has you thinking about what might be if you chose differently. Nice job!

  • Donald E. Baker: Going There

"Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: 'It might have been.'" In this sweet little play, Williams deftly shows how one choice, one chance not taken, could have made all the difference in two young men`s lives. Very well done.

  • Peter Anthony Fields: Going There

Beautifully written stage play. I am honestly at a loss for words. This is a story that illustrates the different possibilities that lay before us in life and reminds us to think carefully and completely about where our choices / decisions will lead us. GOING THERE quietly yet urgently implores us to follow our hearts and to do our best to journey through our lives with as few regrets as possible... to live true. Playwright Philip Middleton Williams has crafted a wonderful and deeply moving script.
