I had the pleasure of hearing this with The Ugly Radio. The single-bedroom setting captures the protagonist's isolation and paranoia perfectly. The play explores mental health, trauma, and the line between reality and hallucination, drawing the audience into the protagonist's desperation. Eerie sound effects keep us questioning what is real. It's hauntingly good! "They’re In There" is a must-see for fans of psychological horror and it showcases John Busser's talent for immersive theater. Bravo!

After hearing this play on a couple of podcasts, I finally got around to reading it. Now this play is stuck in my brain, playing tricks and haunting my dreams. In THEY’RE IN THERE, John Busser sets the funny aside and goes straight for the dark and unnerving. And with great success! Give it a read and a listen, if you dare!

The slow build in tension makes this play so good, so taught, is it all in poor Mr Kaplins head?
From a playwright of so much brilliant comedy comes this horror curveball. A clever play which challenges reality against mental disturbance. Then there's the killer final line.
Brilliant! Check out the audio production on THE UGLY RADIO podcast.

  • James Perry: They're In There

"They're In There" by John Busser takes the audience on a suspenseful and psychological journey as it explores the blurred lines between reality and imagination. The play cleverly weaves themes of mental health, trauma, and the fragility of the human mind into its narrative.

A psychological horror story about the anxiety of apartment living, where your neighbors can hear one's every word, and the building may be infested, leads into body horror.

Well… Busser gave my heebies a big ole side of jeebies. Great job. I hate it. I love it, but I hate it.

Sign me up for this play-- I adore it. A truly effective and scary play seems awfully lacking these days, and it is so nice to have so many trying their hands are evolving the genre to the stage. This play succeeds wildly, even by its mere existence on the page. It is simple, funny, and genuinely scary. Thank you for the use of the word, "Chittering," which sent chills down my spine. I want to see this baby produced!

Perfect for Halloween! Or anytime you want to freak on someone else’s behalf. THEY’RE IN THERE is John Busser at his most maniacal. Really impressive how with just one character, a minimalist set, and some sound effects and voices from a phone - the playwright creates this incredible pressure cooker. A favorite line: “You’re up here, little phantom noises, just making my life hell.” Read it for the intense atmosphere. Read it for the radical surprise. Read it because you love great creepy little plays.

Nice, short, and creepy. It would fit nicely in an evening of short horror plays.

This piece had me itching my own skin by the end of page 2. The writer expertly builds the tension as his poor character has to suffer through this eternal torment. This piece needs an audience to appreciate the ever heightening tension the writer has created brilliantly before a superb ending! I'm not normally one for 'creepy' plays but this one really caught my attention and I think it will do for an audience.
