Beautiful. Builds beautifully. It's hard to know where the piece is going until you're there and in tears of anger and joy. Lovely work.

I was fortunate enough to see Sugar performed live over a year ago, and still find myself affected by its simplicity and perfection. Two strong roles for women, check. Skillfully crafted plot, check. Ultimate high stakes and urgency? Double check. It gave me fear and brought me hope.

Strong dialogue, packs a punch (if I can use that word?). A play that works in ten minutes--quite an achievement.

  • Charles Scott Jones: Sugar

A play that is mostly 2 women talking on both sides of a door establishes intrigue - both Jaden and Lilia know much more than the audience until the reveal and it's fascinating trying to figure out what's going. The symbolism that harkens back to a neighbor borrowing a cup of sugar and in so doing begins a communal bond - is very powerful in this desperate context. SUGAR by Jennifer O'Grady is an important play and I feel fortunate to have read it.

Wow! I did not expect that at all. An important play that is well told and convincing. We need more like this to make people aware.

This is such a smart and timely play. I'm thinking about how annoying the character of Jaden is, and then there's a turn about that was completely unexpected. And bravo for Jaden. This play belongs in every short play festival.

This play is a revelation. It does what every great ten-minute play does—it builds in intensity to an emotionally fulfilling ending with something profoundly important to say, with a sense of urgency and purpose. I wondered why Lilia kept talking to Jaden through the door at first, and then the motivations for both characters became clear crystal clear with the simple slip of an envelope. I can see why this has been such a winner!

  • Christopher Plumridge: Sugar

Oh the tension in this short play is incredible, audiences will really be leaning forwards, eager to see the outcome. Clearly Lilia needs help, but is Jaden all she seems. Read this to find out for yourself. I think this could be filmed to be used by women's support charities.
Also the lyrics of Suzanne Vega's song 'Luca' come to mind.
    A powerful short piece indeed.

  • Morey Norkin: Sugar

It starts with a knock on the door, and the tension builds from there. What is this persistent neighbor after? The reveal heightens the urgency and will have your heart racing! Deserving of the attention it has received, SUGAR should be on everyone’s list!

We love women supporting women! SUGAR is a smart piece with powerful dialogue. Jaden's plan unravels skillfully to a beautiful conclusion...or shall I say a beautiful new beginning? Applause for O'Grady. Let's get this piece onstage!
