Recommendations of Euripides, You Buy-a Dese

  • Donald E. Baker: Euripides, You Buy-a Dese

It's a play from the off-kilter mind of John Busser, so you know you're going to get a feast of giggles, groans, and guffaws. All the well-honed tools from Busser's bag of tricks--the sly wordplay, the outrageous puns, the creative anachronisms (because, why let chronology interfere with a joke?), the odd pop-culture references--make their appearance in dialogue guaranteed to delight any reader and any audience. Vintage Busser and therefore terrific.

I've always loved the way John sets up for a play so that even before the characters have spoken you can see the stage/scene in your mind, and from that point in it gets even better! Maxie is an absolute diamond of a character who offers lines that had me laughing out loud at certain points. You don't often associate philosophy with laugh-out-loud humour but if there is anyone that could make it happen, John could, and has! Would make a fabulously unique play for a festival!

A Danny Devito-type character, loads of “father” jokes, and olive gardens! From the mind of John Busser, it’s Ancient Greece like you’ve never seen it before! Funny, smart, everything you expect from a John Busser comedy and only 22 (23?) drachmas!

  • Nora Louise Syran: Euripides, You Buy-a Dese

Somewhere on the lower west-side of Athens (!) Horace and Doria (who are in a Platonic relationship...or are they?) stop into Maxie's who "stock[s] all the big schools of thought"...Hysterical historical allusions, anachronisms and puns a plenty; Busser delivers up plain silliness.

    "How charming... Father jokes."
This play is so silly-goofy! Full of wordplay, historical jokes, and headed by a Danny Devito-esque lead; "Euripides, You Buy-a Dese" is a fun little play by John Busser. And with a title like that, how could you not want to read it?!

  • Marcia Eppich-Harris: Euripides, You Buy-a Dese

The title alone is hilarious, but for those who know a little something about the ancient world, this play is a hoot! There are tons of inside jokes, and yet, I think even general audiences would respond to the hilarity of the ancient capitalist salesman. I loved this! So much comic potential for the stage!!

Hilarious! Right up there with Mel Brooks and The History of the World Part 1. This short is so packed full of jokes and puns that it’s enough to make your head spin. And as a recovering philosophy major I found it especially rib tickling.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Euripides, You Buy-a Dese

The short is not only funny, but smart-funny, which is the best kind. And two of the three characters speak in a historically stylized way about seemingly contemporary things, which makes it even funnier. The juxtaposition of ancient and modern works really well in this play. I'll bet this is a hoot to see live!

I was laughing out loud at the SMART jokes in this play! I actually feel a little smarter after reading it. But is it "too soon" for Pompeii jokes? I'm not sure what the philosophy is on that. But it's still hilarious! If you're a fan of "father jokes" with a little bit of historical education behind them, this is the play for you!

Another punny and down-right funny play by Busser that goes down smoothly like most philosophical schools of thought. Seems that dates (the kind with other people) have always been a hard thing to figure out for the youth of their generation. You'll be glad you took a few moments to spend some time at Maxie's store to find out how Doria and HOrace do on theirs.
