When her estranged childhood sweetheart mysteriously dies, Amitra returns home after a sixteen year absence to Black Bear Island, which legend says is haunted by a monstrous man-killing bear. As she searches for the truth, the forest begins to engulf the house and her past begins to collide with the present as her memory starts to unfog. This gothic, magical realistic thriller explores regret, the unreliableness of our own memories, and the paths we choose to become who we are.

BLACK BEAR ISLAND

This play's evocative atmosphere and mysterious subject matter draws audiences in from the start. The off kilter characters are specifically drawn, the breadcrumbs are ones we want to follow, and the effect is engaging and spooky punctuated with well-timed humor. It's a psychological drama wrapped up in the bearskin rug of horror and mystery.

A beautifully and meticulously structured memory play, BLACK BEAR ISLAND creates its own chronological magic, bending time to its own unique rules. The well-paced mystery kept me on the edge of my proverbial seat, and tapped into profound themes of loss, love, and the memories we choose to keep of each other. A devastating example of how you can’t go home again, this play feels intimate, mythic, and epic all at once. Gorgeous, wonderful, thrilling play.

Another wonderful play to see at its Alleyway showcasing! Myers' narrative is a gripping realization, that wonderfully makes everyone feel suspicious throughout Amitra's arc. A play about uncovering the past, with such a delightful question of what we leave behind, and the promises we make on the edges of the mainland. Truly a winner!
