As I was reading this very clever (and frighteningly relevant) play, I was struck by how little we tend to understand each other upon first meeting each other, even without AI creating an emotional abyss between us. The thought of a female presenting robot analyzing Milton and women’s liberation was fascinating. What is encouraging in Morey Norkin’s “brave new world” is how the robot helps to distract the teacher from his fear of flying. Now if they can distract people from being rude on flights, that would really be cost-effective!

  • Kim E. Ruyle: Flight of Fancy

A fun, unique meet-cute between a nervous, first-time flyer and an android flight attendant. Some great comical moments – e.g., tomato juice in the crotch and my favorite line, “Perhaps you’ve heard of my ancestors: Larry, Moe, and Curly.” In addition to being highly amusing, Morey Norkin’s play explores some interesting aspects of human attraction and technology. The first-time flyer has a great ride, and so does the audience!

  • Debra A. Cole: Flight of Fancy

What a sweet and fascinating short play about technology, learning, and growing as humans... and robots. MOREY NORKIN creates a part delightful and part terrifying new world where the concept of being human is negotiable and constantly changing. The physicality of the piece would make it a fun evening for an audience.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Flight of Fancy

This sweet short about a human who gets an upgrade and a robot who needs one has a nice message in it. It would be a fun two-hander for a pair of actors, easy to stage, and cheap to produce, since the props are all pantomimed. It would be a clever, original piece for a night of shorts.

  • Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn: Flight of Fancy

This play shows a lovely "human" connection in a very unexpected way. At first the connection feels very one sided and superficial. But it is lovely to watch it grow and unfold. The device of having all the other characters and props mimed really cuts out the "noise" of the environment and allows you to focus on the two "people" assisting each other, learning and "upgrading."

  • Genia Miller: Flight of Fancy

“Flight of Fancy” has a delightfully dystopian perspective that includes misgivings about AI to the list of the fears of flying. Morey Norkin cleverly references real-life adventures (Sully Sullenberger), exploits witty idioms, and anticipates misunderstandings between unfeeling AI and compassionate humans. Good read. Will make a memorable production.

  • Christine Foster: Flight of Fancy

Norkin has captured all the familiar and uncomfortable aspects of flying and used it as a background to explore something quite different: Empathy and attraction in a gentle satire on the limitations and possibilities of AI. Along the way we enjoy clever dialogue and amusing allusions. (eg the robotic co-pilot is called Jack Armstrong). Good fun.

I couldn't help but smile all the way though this. The 'exceptionally attractive' air stewardess 'designed by an all male team' gives a funny commentary on our society and then its all framed by the witty if slightly awkward conversation between the new flyer and the stewardess. Its a brilliant back and forth that is sure to have audiences amused from start to finish and I think it it needs to be brought to life!

As an engineer working in airline safety I'm not sure if I want to fly with Bailout Airlines even if the flight attendants are extremely attractive! Flight of Fancy is a fun play, firstly we see an English teacher boarding his very first flight, finding his seat and becoming increasingly nervous as the flight safety presentations are being made. What follows is a sweet dissection of human emotions as the seemingly robotic attendant slowly becomes more human. I would love to see this staged!
