And here I thought I had the worst luck on Grindr. Poor Sam. This 10-minute two-hander taps into the familiar dichotomy and mismanaged expectations between guys who are eager and ready to impress and put on a show (represented deftly in Sam, who has put on a Seussian rhyme scheme) and those people who hurt them (represented by Guy). Anyone with any familiarity with Grindr will understand and appreciate the dynamics of this absurd short comedy!

How do you have a hook-up with someone who speaks in Seussified rhyme? It's definitely possible in this clever play that moves deftly from comedy to darkness. It also contains the funniest Lorax reference you will ever hear.

Ian Donley takes us from whimsy to darkness and back again with “A Seussified Grindr Date.” This short play uses the lyrical cadence of Seuss to navigate through what appears at first glance to be a typical hookup, but when things get serious, we are left with the nervous, vulnerable, angry emotions underlying a hookup’s impersonal trappings. There’s depth to both the words and the actions in this short play. Excellent stuff!

Absurd, awkward, raunchy, unapologetically queer, and riotously funny! A fresh and unique idea that you wish you'd come up with yourself. Thank god Ian Donley beat us all to the punch. I loved this!

This is such a brilliant idea and Ian Donley masterfully creates a thrilling piece that grabs the attention of any reader. I love the implications of liking Dr. Seuss in second grade making one gay and how that translates to the present. This is a great comedy and one that I would love to see performed live.

The home truth of A SEUSSIFIED GRINDR DATE is that we hang on to our childhood obsessions until they show up when we least need it. Like Seussian rhymes while on an app hookup. I like that Sam seeming gay for liking Dr. Seuss too much while in second grade interfaces with being gay as an adult - how seeming / being collide in Ian Donley's very funny play.

I love "what happened next" stories. In this one, a certain beloved children's book character has grown up, although his wardrobe preferences are the same and he still speaks in rhyme. His breakfast food choice is familiar also, and he attempts to serve it to a stranger he met on Grindr. Unfortunately, his high hopes for this assignation are doomed to disappointment. Even so, there's a lot to enjoy in this imaginative short play.

Poor Sam misunderstands the conventions of the Grindr encounter. It's enough to make anyone stop rhyming and has life-altering consequences for his "date."
