Recommendations of THE DATING POOL, a one-act play for 5 women plus optional additional characters

  • Jennifer O'Grady: THE DATING POOL, a one-act play for 5 women plus optional additional characters

Utter delight of a play from Rose, whose plays I love for their emotional range and theatrical inventiveness. Here, a woman of 61 converses with her various younger selves--and shares some not-so-great news about what's ahead for them--with a fabulous mix of laugh-out-loud humor and great poignancy. With a flexible cast and fantastic roles for women, this would be a blast to perform and will appeal to audiences everywhere. I would love to see it on stage!

The Dating Pool should be a go-to for theatres looking to cast women in a variety of well-defined roles. Beyond offering that important element, the play also offers a creative exploration of how we look back on life decisions. Did we do the right thing? What were the consequences? Would we make a different decision based on what we know now? There are plenty of thought-provoking moments in this play that will linger. It will appeal to everyone.

  • Karen Fix Curry: THE DATING POOL, a one-act play for 5 women plus optional additional characters

Who we are changes as we live our lives, and looking back at what we were, our mistakes, and who we want to be can be difficult. In this wonderful play, a recent widow must decide whether or not to jump back into the dating pool. It's funny, and insightful, as these women argue and learn from one another. A terrific piece full of theatricality and inspiration.

  • Robert Weibezahl: THE DATING POOL, a one-act play for 5 women plus optional additional characters

The person we were at 16 or 23 or 49 lives within our present self, pestering us about what we did wrong in our lives or might have done differently. Arianna Rose gleefully plays with this reality in this very clever and frequently hilarious short play: a dream-dialogue between a woman of 61, hesitant to dive back into the murky waters of the dating pool (in the dream logic guise of an actual pool), and her younger incarnations, both callow and jaded. A pitch-perfect script for a range of female actors/voices. Read it. Relate to it. Produce it.

If your younger selves could talk to your older self before making some pretty bad choices in life, this would be how. This short play gathers all 'herselves" in a fun and enlightening way. Talk about stop the world I want to get off! This is a very different take on moving forward in life.

  • Bruce Karp: THE DATING POOL, a one-act play for 5 women plus optional additional characters

This is an incredibly clever story about one woman's "what ifs," "don't dos", "Why did I's" and ultimately, "how do I go on from here(s)." Ms. Rose has created a conversation between various stages of the same person's life as she decides whether or not she can jump back into the pool of living. It's funny, just a tad racy and ultimately heartfelt and highly enjoyable. A great play for a community theater with multiple roles for women of many different ages. Read it!
