A snappy dialogue between writers that isn't afraid to get risque. Perfect for a night of one acts about love and dating.

Va-Va-Vicarious is a surprising, charming, and hilarious comedy from Kim Ruyle. I loved seeing actors at the 2025 Midwest Dramatists Conference bring this play to life, and I know audiences all over will love it too. Excellent!

There is something about Kim Ruyle's dialogues that is so natural and glorious! This 2 hander in an airport lounge brings some incredible characters together in an adult meet/cute that tells a story that is rare and wonderful.

I have had this very conversation with a really hot guy in the Admirals Club at O'Hare and it was... Oh, hell, of course I didn't, but wouldn't it be amazing? Kim E. Ruyle had me at the first awkward moment, and from then on I was on board with this gloves-off meet-up that would sell out like one of Amanda Longington's bodice-rippers at every Hudson News in every airport from Miami to Anchorage. We writers live for stories like this, and Mr. Ruyle gets the gold.

You know things are going to get serious when two writers who live by their pen names reveal their real names. And what names they are! Their seeming disregard for each other's genres melts away when they make a different sort of connection. Through its twists and turns this play is engaging and very funny throughout.

As a hack whose second home is the Delta Sky Club, I FELT SEEN!!! The play accurately portrays the inherent disrespect of genre writers, even BY genre writers! And speaking as a proud genre writer, I was with them all the way. (All the way – see what I did there?) The banter makes me want to find the hidden gems in their work, and I'm totally shipping an action/romance collab after they collaborate on some action and romance themselves. I'll watch their stuff until they get back from... you know

Writers and their endless foibles don't always make for interesting subjects, but Kim Ruyle knows how to set these two into the right moment, loaded with the right ambition and jealousy, so that fireworks indeed go off. Funny, insightful, this is a va-va-valentine to the profession (obsession?) that consumes so many of us. So easy to stage, and two great roles for actors. Loved it at the Midwest Dramatists Conference, where I heard it read!

This delicious and funny play was read at the Midwest Dramatists Convention, where I had the pleasure of hearing it. But reading it again, I could really appreciate the excellent banter between two opposites. Great setup and a terrific ending.

This play was one of the highlights of the recent Midwest Dramatist Conference. Pulling off a sharp romantic comedy in ten minutes is quite a challenge, but Ruyle pulls it off in grand style. Simple to produce and the actors will have a blast!

10.21.25 - One of the Midwest Dramatist Conference true highlights, this play about 2 bantering writers, each with their own perfect niche genres meet cute at an airport and hijinx ensue. The dialogue is clever, showing a real knack for one-ups-manship that neither character will back down from. I absolutely loved this play from Kim Ruyle. On to the second chapter!
