  • Paul Donnelly: Slapjack Saturday

Kniess pulls off the creative high wire act of a comedy about grief. The grief is as authentic as the laughs (of which there are plenty) and the racoon is hysterical while also serving as a talisman of a widow's loneliness. This is a play of great warmth and humor.

I have a new favourite playwright! Brenton has a gift for creating wonderful, deep characters within seconds, be they human, puppets, or in this case a raccoon.
Now, you can't go wrong with the premise 'a woman walks into a bar with a raccoon' and in this tender play about grief, there are some laugh out loud moments, having an actor dressed as said raccoon will bring the bar down. Superb!

The perfect intersection between grief and comedy. And a testament to the power of friendship. As bizarre as the raccoon on a leash might be, I totally believed it and it worked. Grief makes people do bizarre things and only a friend can help pull you out of that space. Highly recommend this. The physical comedy is great and any actors would enjoy playing any of these roles. Well done, Brenton!
