Two transport agents who work in the so-called “troubled teen industry” are hired by a desperate mother to legally kidnap her daughter in the middle of the night, and deliver them to a residential school in Utah. Agent Deanna Nash is new to the gig and is not quite prepared for what she will encounter at the 3AM pick-up of 15-year-old Neela. Nash and her boss get Neela as far as the airport before Neela's brother shows up and Neela attempts to bolt, but-– by contract with the transport service-- no move she can make will result in her return home. What does it mean to try to contain what we can’t control, and what happens when containment is no longer an option? Desperation looks different, depending which side you’re on, and so does compassion.

Stepping into this play is like stepping into the speeding van at its center, it grabs you at the beginning and never lets go. I knew nothing about this industry and read through the play horrified that any parent would do this to their kids, while also understanding the impulse. The character of Neela is a beautiful example of a real kid on stage. She's messy, defiant, troubled, intelligent, imaginative and filled with beauty. All the characters are complicated, not what you might think at the beginning. The play is truthful and doesn't speak down to teens. Highly recommend.

A riveting play built around a complex, and horrifying practice that I can almost guarantee you know nothing about.

Art often explores outcasts but in L.C. Bernadine's play TRANSPORT, we see an outcast created as a mother has her daughter forcibly removed in the middle of the night.

Her layered characters reveal the dark reality of an industry that's all around us. Bernadine expertly creates a road trip play that explores this industry and the emotional twists and turns entangled within it.

Was this actually best for our characters? Only a read of this play will tell you!

The tension starts at the beginning and Bernadine never lets up. A look at a world that exists which we prefer not to see centering on young people that exist - that their families prefer not to see. It’s a devastating look at the mental health crisis affecting teens today and a look at their few options. Smartly written and highly theatrical, Bernadine sends us on a journey where the destination remains an unknown.
