  • Anastasia Wild: The Doctors Call

Lovely in its simplicity, Christopher Plumridge gives heart-touching depth in a few pages. This is never an easy conversation but one that always requires honesty and compassion. As a nurse, I hope this is a piece that will encourage discussion of end-of-life care far before we reach that door ourselves.

    Heartbreak, beauty, peace and comfort.
Everything that you could want in a tender end-of-life moment, delivered here, simply and expertly, by Mr Plumridge. He elicits the kind of emotion in these three pages that a lesser playwright can struggle to do in 120. Reverent and honest, this is one of the best and most complete plays I have read in a long time. Well done.

  • Agnes Palfi: The Doctors Call

A very calm, realistic piece. This is precisely why it's so unsettling—nothing can be changed. We know exactly what will happen, as it inevitably must in such situations. It's a touching scene. The doctor is ON CALL, and her words are the patient's first 'CALL' from the other world. As if life's final bell were ringing for the first time.

Wow. An incredibly powerful impact for just three pages. There is so much humanity in this piece, perfectly realized. I felt for both characters. The doctor has such a difficult job to do and she does it with great care and dignity for her patient. An excellent piece!

  • Ken Love: The Doctors Call

There is no doubt in my mind that this piece would be as difficult to see performed as it has been to read. Nothing is quiant. There is no bitterness. Not one hint of artifice anywhere. I would use the word "bittersweet", yet - in my opinion - it fails to serve as even an adequate description. For those who can handle 'end of life' themes, it is highly recommended.

So Chris, you've not only tugged at my heartstrings, you've put them in a blender! But in this case its a good thing. The idea of facing our own mortality is always a hard hitting subject but Chris has wrapped that moment for Richard in wonderful tender conversation between him and his doctor with some light sprinkles of humour to bring a smile before you get into the crux of the conversation, which is explored beautifully and delicately. While 'end of life' discussions are a difficult topic to watch and perform Chris handles it beautifully with raw emotion and tenderness.

Three pages, but a emotional roller coaster for me. Plumridge’s words flow gracefully. This scene humanizes a scenario like this. I loved their dynamics and it was instantly established from the first page. Lovely work.

What a beautiful play about end of life decisions. I immediately felt for and loved both characters, and wanted it to go on.

When our time comes, and it surely will, we should be so lucky. Probably the hardest conversation to have, but here the news is delivered beautifully and accepted with grace.

A good illustration of how proper bedside manner can be accomplished even in the most dire of circumstances. Again, a lot of humanity packed into this little scene.
