  • John Busser: I Know You Are But What Am I?

12.21.24 - Wonderfully witty political satire, and it's done with almost no dialogue. Now THAT'S talent. Emily McClain gives us a less-than-10-minute lesson in our political spectrum and how limited it truly is, all while double-dosing us with a look at consumer shopping trends and psychological color tropes. It's brilliant. This will be not only a hoot for the actors, and the set designers, but a director orchestrating all this should have be puffing up their chest too.

  • Aly Kantor: I Know You Are But What Am I?

You don't need much to tell an epic story on stage—just larger-than-life performers and a script like this one, which provides the fierce motivations actors need to butt heads (and stomp Doritos, as the case may be). This near-silent story is a sensory treat that would work wonderfully with or without a dramatic underscore! Plus, audiences will be leaning forward, attempting to decode the secret supermarket messages McClain has left for us! Current, relatable, and a baffling, funny good time!

  • Philip Middleton Williams: I Know You Are But What Am I?

This hilarious short play, done almost all in silence, is a masterpiece of acting and intentions. Emily McClain deftly directs her three characters to make the most of their skills on stage and using the little moments and movements to tell a story where words are not needed. Modern audiences may not remember silent film stars like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, but this will teach them that all it takes is a look to tell the truth.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: I Know You Are But What Am I?

So creative! I love (and am in awe of) how this short uses movement/actions to tell the story instead of words - How did Emily McClain pull this off?? It's such an ambitious idea for the stage, and a very cathartic experience for those of us whose political views align with Ginger's and Marie's. Never stop making red-bag-buyers feel uncomfortable at the grocery store, ladies.

The premise of this short piece has played out in kitchens and living rooms across the nation during the Thanksgiving holiday and I was completely convicted by the final line! A wonderful (mostly) silent exercise in storytelling by a master story teller. So nice!

  • Matthew Weaver: I Know You Are But What Am I?

A perfect addition to any festival of plays, and guaranteed to be the one audiences leave talking about.
McClain here uses silence to full advantage, inviting us to pore over the characters' every motion and nuance, until the truth can be revealed. And when it is ...
She gets just as much credit for tackling contemporary subject material in such a cathartic way. I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I? is a loving squeeze on the shoulder for heartbroken audience members, & a much needed, if grim, chuckle.
