NORA LOUISE SYRAN’s monologue, “I’ll decide When I’m Being Ghosted, Thank You Very Much”, is poetic, sublime, and prophetic. There are so many thoughts and emotions that we experience when someone close to you leaves and can never return. What did we say that we wish wasn’t said? What did we not say that needs to be said?

  • Aly Kantor: I'll Decide When I'm Being Ghosted, Thank You Very Much

There is a deeply melancholy sense of inevitability in this monologue, delivered to a person who, by design, will never hear it - a relationship between the ghosted and the ghost. The imagery, while simple, is sublime, with a universality that we can all relate to, for better or for worse. I also love the way it describes the transience of loss. Effective and affecting work.

  • Mike Byham: I'll Decide When I'm Being Ghosted, Thank You Very Much

Beautifully written monologue. Caution - reading this will make you stop thinking about your daily routine to remember your missing loved ones. It's sometimes somber, sometimes angry and sometimes self-pitying - just like grief. It's a love letter to the pain we feel with each parting. And in the end - there's acknowledgement of a path to own it and move on. So very well done.

    It's called a soliloquy, Nora!

And what a soliloquy it is!

Often the best monologues are arguments, either with an absent entity, one's self, or both. Here, Syran's speaker is picking a fight with someone who is already gone, leading to physical and emotional declarations, resonating the evolution of boulders into stones, smooth and skippable, jagged and sharp - paradoxically closing the distance in an ever-widening space to force an impossible connection. A powerful and empowering piece!

Oh my gosh, this monologue is beautiful and sad. A lovely testament to grief and all the things it makes you feel.

A monologue or a poem. I’d call it a poetic monologue. The soaring language and imagery can’t be confined to the stage. Beautiful.

12.09.25 - A powerful reminder that some things (and people) won't just be ignored. The imagery that comes to mind from the mention of the pebble in the shoe is potent because we've ALL had that invasive little rock in a shoe from time to time. No matter how small, that rock has the power to stop us in out tracks and take notice of it. People can and should be the same way. If you're being unjustly ignored, be that irritant in the shoe. Make them take notice. Nicely done, Nora.

This moving and powerful monologue explores loss and pain with evocative imagery. Beautifully written, this piece is a reminder of the dignity contained in self-empowerment, especially after someone has let you down.
