Recommendations of Tender Chickens

  • Matthew Weaver: Tender Chickens

Busser wholeheartedly embraces a chickentacular title, with gusto, and the results are anything but fowl. No poultry pun goes unexplored, with enough ribald innuendo to please the naughtiest of audiences. Fun for the whole henhouse.
Upon being called a birdbrain: "That’s not much of an insult considerin’ I’m a bird."
A gem of a nugget, and a nugget of a gem.

What can I say? Busser refuses to pull any punches when it comes to a fantastical casts being, you know, fantastical. He always finds the perfect sweet spot between an actor's dream/nightmare and a producer's dream/nightmare. Clucking hilarious!

This is so funny! John Busser filled this play up with tons of chicken puns and funny phrases to the max! The characters and the stage directions CRACKED ME UP!! I also appreciate how this play tackles child and parent relationships, and how Shelly finds their place in the biiig coop! Well done John!

CHICKEN PUNS! GET YER CHICKEN PUNS! THEY'RE ALL RIGHT HERE! And I do mean ALL of them! This short play is like if your community theatre's production of HONK! was geared toward the grown-ups in the audience instead of the chickies. The only thing funnier than the barnyard banter and bickering may be the stage directions! You won't find a more irreverent play about chickens than this one...if you're looking for an irreverent play about chickens for some reason. This one is an outsized BUH-last!

When I die, I will meet the ferryman. I will pay my toll to gain passage across the river Styx and be taken to the darkest corners of Tartarus, where egregious puns are etched upon the walls and buffoonery reigns. There, I will descend into eternal, giggling madness at the hands of my tormentor, John Busser. You will join me in this forsaken place, and we will both love every single second. Don't a-pollo-gize, Busser. You've outdone yourself. So funny it hurts.

I was cracking up as soon as I started reading this egg-celent short. Busser infuses dad joke energy into a sweet barn-yard incestual tale with one punny zinger after another. Just when you think he won't go there, he cocka-doodle does. They will be lining up in all the chicken strip clubs to see this performed. Outstanding, silly fun awaits actors lucky enough to be invited to participate and the audiences witnessing the birth of Shelly.

Wildly absurd and irresistibly bold, Tender Chickens leans into gleeful chaos with fearless humor. Busser gives actors permission to go big, weird, and physical, delivering a short play that’s unforgettable, outrageous fun.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Tender Chickens

This short play is unhinged. What a glorious fever dream, with amazing opportunities for physicality for the cast. So original, so out there, this would be the most remembered play in any night of shorts. Five stars, I love it.

The script for John Busser's Tender Chickens is essentially a permission slip for three actors to go way over-the-top. The audience at Cleveland Public Theatre's Dark Room ate it up, no barbecue sauce needed!

What came first? The title or the play? I may know what prompted this feathery fable, which makes it all the more impressive. Because this tale is no mere chickenscratch- it's inventive, quick-witted, ludicrous fun!
