Recommendations of Nonsense and Beauty

  • Seth McNeill: Nonsense and Beauty

A delicate, bittersweet epic. It loves all of its characters, making each of the supporting characters multi-dimensional and complicated when a lesser play would have made them "the wife" or "the wise-cracking best friend," and in so doing creates a dramatic world with all of the contradictions and complicated feelings by and about each other that we experience in real life. At the same time, it brings to light the many differences between Forster's time and now in a fashion that is hopeful without being saccharine or naive.

  • Adam Richter: Nonsense and Beauty

A remarkable drama about the life of one of the 20th century's best-known English authors and his doomed love life. The social norms and attitudes -- oh yeah, and the laws -- that forced Forster and Buckingham to carry on their romance in secret are not that far back in the rear view mirror of history, and Scott masterfully shows the price that they had to pay. This was a wonderful play to read.

  • Stephen Spotswood: Nonsense and Beauty

A great look at the hidden history of E.M. Forster and what it meant to live as a gay man in the first half of the 20th century.
