Recommendations of The Anchovy

We included this play in our high school senior-directed one-act festival and it provided a great opportunity for the actors to dig into these roles and explore the complexities of love and romance that Weaver sets up in the play. A great addition to the overall program.

The juxtaposition of a goddess disguised behind fish guts is a compelling premise and Macauley's need for his feelings to be understood and reciprocated, even momentarily, are easy to identify with. Aphrodite surprises with insight and is more perceptive than in common myths.

I really loved reading this play. It had a lot of great comedic elements, and it's such a cute love story! It is very relatable, and I loved the connection to Aphrodite.

My first look at a play of Matthew Weaver's - With playwright's tools and a sure hand, he has written a lovely story about love. Entertaining and fresh. I look forward to reading more of his work.

A charming premise that will make you want anchovies on your next pizza! Molto bene!

Utterly charming and very funny short play about seeking and love that anyone can relate to. I adore Weaver's version of Aphrodite in this play (I'm thinking she might need additional plays) and her interactions with the two young humans who need her help. A delight!

First of all, “Macaulay Warbler” is one of the great names in all of literature!

Second, if you think you know what Macaulay’s wish is when you start reading this, chances are you’re wrong.

Weaver takes the magical intervention of unrequited love scenario and gives it an elegant twist. Filled with grand purpose, sassy dialogue, the requisite palpable yearning for such a tale as well as an elegant, intimate agony, this little mythical moment is a delicious bite, whether you like anchovies or not.
