I love examining the collision of playfulness and the dark side of human nature, spanning from settings in fantastical war-torn poetic landscapes, to the strange emotional inner lives of outsiders and outlaws. I’m drawn to exposing the unexposed in society, I’m interested in plays that make the unheard heard. I’m fueled by horror and humor put side by side, I’m intrigued by darkness and poetry, images and language that are disturbing, haunting and beautiful, strange, dangerous, subversive, impacting, mythic, savage, satirical. I especially love language that drives, as well as characters with imposing physicality and big personality. War, crime, imprisonment, injustice, heartbreak, death and nightmares are themes I continually return to, along with the absurdities, cruelty and violence that comes with it. Things don’t usually turn out well for my characters, but it’s how they fight that intrigues me. Even though my writing returns to dark themes, they are always colored and paired with absurdity, humor and tenderness.
