Artistic Statement

Simply put, when I was younger (acting and writing), I would write plays about people I didn't know, people I'd invented. I'd assume they had nothing to do with my life. Then, when I saw the plays done a year or two later, I'd say, Wow. Thats my life. And then, in my mid-40s, I wrote a series of poems about the volatile relationship I had with my dad. It became an award-winning play of mine, "World of Sinatras." Since then my autobiography has made itself very clear to me, and in narrative forms. I mine this, its psychology, its poetry and its politics, for all my work. I just finished directing a film of mine, "Summer of '70," which does just that.
