Artistic Statement
I live in a world where Imagination reigns. Writing for the stage permits that Imagination to play, dance, beguile and evoke. In my world, little girls talk to the moon and the moon replies. Men taste love instead of feel it; corporate executives masquerade as clowns and Romeo and Juliet live on as a crotchety couple. It is one thing to write a story or an essay and view the words on the two-dimensional page. But in writing a play, the author has the chance to see her characters walking around the stage—loving, laughing, crying, scheming and killing. That creates the addictive adrenaline rush to keep writing. Each new play is a collaboration. First, Imagination and Inspiration combine to create the framework of characters in conflict. Next, actors lend their voices, filling out the characters’ forms. When they hit the stage, it’s the audience who reaches across. Somewhere in the middle their energies collide, sparking what we know as theatre Magic.
