Artistic Statement
I discovered long ago that my creative journey was motivated by a need to express, though it took a while for that expression to find its voice in the arts. Emotionally blocked as a child, my only available outlet for expression was physical, and so I pursued athletics with a vengeance, becoming an accomplished baseball player with opportunities to play professionally.
Suffice it to say, that as I matured and gained increased self-respect as a more multi-dimensional person, the fire-in-the-belly desire for a baseball career gave way to different needs. So after college, and after a disquieting year at law school, I found myself pursuing acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Ten years into a modest acting career, primarily in theater, a desire to make my own dramatic statements emerged. Facilitated by a strong entrepreneurial instinct, I formed an independent production company (Perk Productions) to produce three, short, fictional films which I wrote and directed, and which inexplicably achieved some significant commercial success through their world-wide distribution by Columbia Pictures. From then on, I understood that creative satisfaction for me lay not in the pursuit of acting parts, but in the creation of projects.
Despite this brief, though transformative migration into filmmaking, most of my career has been in the theater. And as my body of work will attest, I have been fortunate to have participated in many of theater’s creative disciplines, particularly writing, directing, acting, and producing: The Stamford Theatre Works (1988-2008), Founder/Producing Director).
My diversification of experience has informed my dramatic writing, and has helped me to feed my ambition to explore subjects of personal dramatic interest with enthusiasm and determination, if not always with confidence and courage. At this point in my creative development, it is the writing that provides the most satisfying challenge to my continuing passion for expression, and my enduring love-affair with the creative process.
