Artistic Statement

I write tall tales about regular people, new Americana stories about rural characters navigating the modern world. I deconstruct the notions of modern notions of masculinity and present audiences men who are barely holding it together, burdened by their traditions and expectations, begging the world for a friend.
With deep roots in New Mexico and West Virginia, I think I have a unique and lived understanding of rural poverty, opportunity and stories that bring new audiences into theaters. But, they're not really new audiences because folks in rural American used to be a devoted theater-going audience. Every county in the West Virginian vicinity where I live has an Opera House where stages are empty 300 days a year. I feel like I'm writing plays for those stages.
