Artistic Statement
I am a playwright because I need a way to tell stories beyond the page as a creative writer, essayist, and poet, beyond the silent image, as visual artist, and at times in conjunction with the world of performance art and installation. My other hat is that of a singer; my vocal work assists my playwriting through rhythm and dialog. I have been creating immersive theatre before the term was coined. As a former independent casting director for film and television, casting actors led to a desire to create my own characters and story lines for live performance. All of my artistic experiences serve my work as playwright.
Social injustice fuels my work. Dealing with social, political, gender, and environmental issues on stage, especially without a fourth wall, is exciting to me, sometimes placing characters beyond the proscenium. For me, a sense of place, and place as character is important. Creating a site-specific work is a challenge I like to confront. Addressing non-traditional topics set on a traditional stage is also something that I find appealing.
I appreciate and enjoy the idea of collaboration with a director, since it provides an opportunity to have my stories transformed through the vision and understanding of that person and the actors playing the roles I’ve written.
