Artistic Statement

I write because reading changed my life. Books opened the world to me, showed me there were others like me, people who looked different from me, places I had never dreamed of. I was four years old when my dad taught me to read from Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne. I use my words to tell stories, create worlds, show others they are not alone. After I saw my first stage play, I knew I wanted to do theater as well as write in other formats. As a writer it is my job to tell the truth in the form of stories -- stories that represent humanity, especially those who are marginalized.

My audiences are those who seek themselves on the page and on the stage. In my work, I show up for them as one who tells the truth in a way that entertains them while evoking feelings at the same time. Many truths are easier to swallow after a laugh. Some feelings require reflection and a quiet space. I offer both. I am an ally to those who, like myself, have had to look harder to find themselves represented.

It is also my job as a literary citizen to support my fellow writers by attending their plays, buying their books, reading their work, offering reviews. I do these things with enthusiasm, joy, and love.
