Artistic Statement
I start with a feeling. I ascribe it to a character. That character meets someone feeling something else. They interact and mostly try to hide what they are feeling from each other. My project has begun. I am interested in feelings, what makes us human, why they happen, why we try to hide them, and what happens when the subterfuge stops working. Nothing makes me FEEL like live theatre--because real people are doing it. We are all in the same room. We can reach out and touch each other, hear each other breathe, watch spit fly, see sweat--real breathing, laughing, crying, coughing, clapping, courageous people. The house lights begin fading out and I get a lump in my throat, like an emotional patella tendon. I don’t always like the way I feel but I marvel at a play’s power to take me to a new emotional place--what I demand of art.
I try to measure up when I write plays by telling the truth--because all the real people of the theatre demand and deserve nothing less.
