Artistic Statement
Queer lives are frequently messy, naughty, and, at times, mundane. In short, queer people aren’t that different from straight people, yet we’re often more daring. Queer people more readily embrace living on the edge, a result of being pushed to the margins by mainstream society. My plays reflect modern queer lives - they’re unabashedly queer, sexy, maybe even a bit unsettling. Queer audiences find the plays both familiar and edgy as they’re welcomed into narratives that authentically represent their lives. Straight audiences might feel deluged by the queerness in my works. But they can’t help but find universality in the specificity of the narratives.
When I produce works by others, I’m focused on boosting the voices of LGBTQ+ writers. I strive to provide queer people opportunities to tell their own stories and develop their voices on their own terms. I believe the act of writing offers a catharsis for the writer, and the plays become vital records of our lives and experiences. As LBGTQ+ rights are being targeted, it’s that much more critical to amplify narratives that show our humanity and find meaning and value in our existence.
