Artistic Statement

I have been an educator and arts advocate my whole career, as a Teaching Artist, Education Director in regional theater, and Drama Teacher with the NYC Department of Education. I believe the purpose of theatre is catharsis. Simply put, when communing with an audience through a common experience, we change, grow, and heal. This can be as small a change as laughing and feeling good after a bad day, or the deeper emotional healing that comes from relating to characters and viscerally experiencing their journey.

My writing starts with relationship and character. Story and plot build from there. I create twists and turns that expose the heart and distinctive motivations of the characters, making them relatable to a large audience.

I studied and practice Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process. I gain insight into the best way to develop my work by hearing it read aloud and receiving feedback. Through collaboration with a director, I am able to discover the deeper levels in my writing, assess the content, and focus on the necessary revisions. As actors breathe life into the dialogue, I am able to finetune each scene to illuminate the intended themes in the work. This developmental process serves me well.
