A favorite political science professor taught me that the words “theory” and “theater” come from the same root word for seeing things as whole and interconnected. A theater is a place where we show our theory of society. At least, that is why I am doing it. Directors I’ve worked with sometimes describe my plays as “meaty” and “beefy,” and I love that, because I do strive to write stories that my audience wants to chew on, to talk about.
