Theater enthralls me! It's about examining ourselves in a Microcosm or a Macrocosm. I always have a solid plot when I write, but I am character-driven. Are we monstrous? Are we angelical? Or are we always bouncing from one to the other? Taking apart each aspect of self and looking at it. Am I terrified of it? Does it represent me? Am I ashamed of it? THEATER SHOULD CHANGE YOU WHEN IT’S OVER. I try and make my plays about a way out of a “belief system, or a way of thinking that has been limiting you.” I try and write about them in a way that would be engaging, cathartic, relatable! (Ex: cancer, the approach of death, negative-people, abuse, male-entitlement, and messiah complexes by actual messiahs.)
Father was "Lifer" in the Army and my mother was a southern girl, looking for adventure. My father suffered trauma and passed it on to my family through violence. I am constantly examining this in my work. I am not ashamed of my upbringing but use it as fuel to love life, love humanity, and love theater.
My strengths are I write a well-made play. I’m a structuralist, first. I always have comedy in my work and drama too. I love magic realism and love plays that are purely theatrical. I love to create a mood with my work. Whether it’s fun, controversial, witty, or it could be more "other worldly," (even though the story takes place in my own backyard.) But I always try and make my plays enthralling.
My favorite plays that changed me: FAIRVIEW, ANGELS IN AMERICA, SLAVE PLAY, TORCH SONG TRILOGY, THE REAL THING, ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD. LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, and SO many more.
