Artistic Statement

As a southern playwright, songwriter, actress and arts educator, my artistic purpose is rooted in the music, stories, contradictions and voices of the South. I lean heavily on personal experiences and relationships to create and sustain my work. I strive to tell stories that uplift, challenge and hopefully elicit empathy. I work to present compassion and authenticity in my communities on and off the stage.
I reside in Charlotte, North Carolina and been a Carolinian for almost 30 years now, but received my MFA from Mount Saint Mary’s University in LA. I have worked in the theater most of my life. My plays are published nationally through Broadway Licensing (recently purchased by Concord Theatricals) and though my plays have really only been received in the South, they have a had a niche following that I have had the pleasure of watching grow over the past decade.
I have also worked on feature films, regional theater and with touring companies.
While I am proud of my recognized work, some of my favorite productions and projects have been those that have never been published or seen by the masses. For over a decade I taught afterschool drama at my daughter’s elementary school, ran musical theater summer camps and wrote new plays each year for the students to perform. Those musicals filled my creative soul more than any published work ever could.
My plays have been selected for readings and prizes and I have self-produced many stand-alone and touring productions over the years. It is through those experiences that I gained a true appreciation and respect for all aspects of the performing world.
I am many things, actor, mother, singer, songwriter, wife, teacher, director but at the core of it ALL, I am a storyteller. Hopefully, my plays carry a rhythm, sometimes figurative, sometimes literal, that represent voices of the past while still making room for the ideas and dreams of the new voices I encounter.
