NAMING DAY is about Pearl, a Chinese woman, 20s, who is eight-months pregnant, trying to disguise herself as a man. Set 1938 at a college in Nanjing. The other monologue CONFESSION, is about Pika, a psychic college student named after the cartoon character Pikachu, who receives a visitation from her grandfather while she's trying to eat her quinoa salad at her campus cafeteria. Both monologues were commissioned by the Shoah Foundation, which was created by Steven Spielberg to video Holocaust survivors. The archive now collected video from survivors of genocide in the Congo, Guatemala, Armenia, China. In this commission, playwrights were asked to select a video from their archive, and write a short play inspired by the eyewitness testimony of survivors. I chose to write about the rape of Nanjing, when Japanese Imperial forces enter the city and brutally massacred between 300,000 to 500,000 Chinese citizens and raping nearly all women, children, and the elderly, and especially pregnant women.
