Artistic Statement
I am a playwright, first and foremost, alongside a director and producer. My work tends to combine seemingly disparate (but actually quite close) influences: the reality of contemporary life where we are constantly aware of both a physical reality and a digital reality; and ancient symbolism, motifs, and characters from various mythical influences, be it Hindu epics, A Thousand and One Nights, or South Asian folktales. There is this concept that Walter Benjamin references in his work, Origin of German Trauspiel, which fits under the term "constellations". To paraphrase the idea, Benjamin finds that creating a constellation of concepts and ideas – ones that seem distant from each other on the surface – can form an image when aligned, an image that contains a shadow of truth. I like to think of my plays as constellations, stories formed out of seemingly disparate imagery that come together to contain a question of truth.
I am also a playwright that is very invested in making theatrical experiences. I want my plays to exist on stage and to really utilize that physical experience to engross an audience. The audience for theater enters expecting something similar to what they see on television, what they see in movie theaters, and what they see on their phone. They expect to sit, to consume undisturbed, and to be unsurprised and unprovoked. I want a person to come to my show and leave changed forever.
All that considered, my work stands out as modern, specific, playful, fearless, searing and adventurous – I like to either bare my fangs or bare my heart.
