My plays celebrate the absurd and also revel in tiny moments that often go unobserved. I metabolize the world by writing: wake up, make some tea, work it out on the page. I've always known that a laugh is a gateway to empathy, and I hope people connect with my characters through their humor. My background as an actor finds me living in characters’ heads and talking to myself far too much — dialogue is great fun for me. My plays are hopeful. There is an urgency to my hope. The world is beautiful and scary, and I want to be in community with artists to make sense of it. I write because theatre at its best holds up a mirror: who are we? Who do we want to be? Are we okay? How can we be better? Sometimes theatre is a portal to a world I've never imagined, and I come out the other side rearranged. I write to be a change-maker and to wake people up, or at the very least keep them awake for ninety minutes or so.
