Artistic Statement
My work uses humor and whimsy to explore the crossroads of being Black, Latin, and Gay in today's world, connecting to a collective past, and pointing towards a more conscientious future.
I explore how mass media, in all its forms, deeply influences self-perception and identity for the better and the worse. I tap into the ghosts of history, grand theatrical traditions, film and television, musicals, magical realism, and more to muse on the American mindset today. Wrapped in this are examinations of racial self-awareness, from the "unwoke" to the fully actualized.
But, first and foremost, I aim to create work that delights and entertains—then packs its punch.
