Artistic Statement
I write imaginatively-crafted plays where humor emanates from dramatic action. The characters, often quirky, struggle to overcome their obsession with status and money, finding harmony in a disjointed world.
Ultimately, every play I write is about love -- found accidentally but truly. I gravitate toward characters who mostly are religious strays, distressed lawyers, former athletes and overwhelmed parents. My plays are meant to edify, illuminate and entertain. I’m pleased when told my plays help folks see old things in a new way.
Currently, I’ve been creating more and more work moving beyond traditional theatre scripture and structure. This includes a compendium of 365 six-word plays and plays produced in a nature preserve, outdoor field, packed restaurant (pre-Covid), legal conferences, synagogue and, of course, conventional theatrres (virtual and live) -- using spoken word, comedy and collage to tap into the subconscious.
I find great joy being part of a larger arts community. As a long-time tennis coach and mediator, I thrive in collaborative settings. That’s why I’m especially dedicated to my leadership roles with Working Title Playwrights and the Alliance for Jewish Theatre -- and as a dramaturg. As we create theatre, I believe we can be more productive together than alone. I hope we can play together some time soon..
