Artistic Statement

As I move solidly into the middle of my writing career and my life, I find myself fixated on two things. The first is that, it seems to me, in every issue/debate/battle in our culture, the question comes down to who decides. If something affects me, my life, my body, my livelihood, etc., then I get to decide. That's all there is to it. And if someone imagines they have a better handle on my life, or my body, or my livelihood, etc., then we're going to tangle. The second thing is that I am astounded at how we, women I mean, are fighting the same battles we fought a century ago, let alone millennia ago. It's beyond frustrating, but I think my best weapon in the battle is story. So I write about women recognizing their plight, fighting, winning, and sometimes losing. Stories teach us in a way that other things do not and I'm proud to be adding to the canon.
