I am a first generation, Greek-American, raised by brave and tenacious women that instilled in me a thirst for history and language. My passion for storytelling is fueled by the need for plays centered on the kind of women I’ve known throughout my life. Women who are flawed, eccentric, honest, with their own ideas, hopes and fears that don’t revolve around the men in their life. I am an actor who started writing plays because I was disappointed with the lack of women centric stories in theater. The female parts that I came across were just an accessory to the male’s story. They fell within three categories; the sexy love interest, the unattractive friend, or the loving mother. Society doesn’t accept chaotic, imperfect women and there doesn’t seem to be room for such characters in the stories we tell either. I want to challenge that. In my writing, I aim to show that women can exist in a story as someone other than the beautiful lover. They can have sharp edges, big hearts, be messy, self-destructive, yet still succeed and save themselves. These women exist in life. They should be the driving force of the stories we tell too.
