Artistic Statement

As a British playwright living in the US, I have always felt like a bird in the wrong nest. This sense of dislocation is a common theme in my work. My work speaks to the outsider and the 'ordinary person' who finds themselves in extraordinary situations. My play, 'If nobody does remarkable things' centers a climate change activist who finds herself retreating to obscurity and the sea when both her personal life and the planet begin to erode. "When We Fall' speaks to the loneliness of middle age and the need for connection, 'Lumin' investigates the need for community and asks at what point does belief turn into delusion? Other plays have addressed themes such as grief and regret, and asked questions that are centered in a curiosity around the way people behave when placed in complex situations. I am fascinated by the worlds that exists above and around us, worlds that are rarely explored - life on the International Space Station, a rural community in Texas that is actually a cult, the edge of a roof in south east London.
