Artistic Statement
Lisa Rafferty's passion comes from her belief in the power of documentary theater - stories of the human condition, where every word spoken onstage comes directly from sources – interviews and transcriptions, news accounts, social media posts, oral histories and more.
As a playwright-curator, she has created 5 documentary plays in recent years covering topics from the 2013 Boston Marathon to survivors of domestic abuse to 9/11 civilian hero Welles Crowther. Her most recent production was about the unforgettable First Lady, Betty Ford. Upcoming is ONWARD - Votes for Women, commissioned by the Associates of the Boston Public Library in honor of 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
Her shows can be adapted for educational and professional purposes, for casts that range from 8 -30, and utilize color-blind and nontraditional casting. She also created comedies about motherhood and being a breast cancer survivor, using theater as laughter therapy for writer and audience alike.
