Artistic Statement

Bentertainment, the producing entity I use for my plays, is a pun on my last name; but it also reflects my tendency toward narratives and dramatic structures that are, indeed, “bent”: “different from normal; strongly inclined; changed from an originally straight condition.”

I write play-plays, experience plays, solo shows, adaptations and hybrid works. Many of my shows have experiments or questions at their core. What happens during a talk show if the host never arrives? (REAL TALK / KIP TALK). Can a gentle story emerge while characters speak in direct translation from Italian into English? (THE HOTEL COLORS). What happens if you stage a play on an airplane? (BONNIE'S LAST FLIGHT). Can a religious ritual for the digestively disadvantaged provide a moment of authentic grace? (TOILET FIRE). What is "good" poetry? (INDEED, FRIEND!) Can I use a home movie from childhood to unpack white privilege? (ALOHA, ALOHA)

I like plays that ask questions and leave me pondering more questions. I like plays where the humor comes from complicated truths. I appreciate the silly, the ridiculous, and the side door entrances to satire and philosophical inquiry. My plays are often set in the recent past and feature a cadre of weirdos and misfits and puns.
