Artistic Statement
As a retired professor of literature, I often draw inspiration from some of history’s greatest works–The Book of Job, Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein," Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," Elizabeth Browning’s "Sonnets of the Portuguese," and Robert Browning’s masterpiece, "The Ring and the Book." Recurring themes in my work include family bonds, strong and independent women, the process of grief, and the healing power of love. One of my greatest joys as a teacher was workshopping new plays with the director of the drama program and an excited group of young student actors, whose enthusiasm and energy helped shape each new work.
I consider working well in collaboration with other artists to be one of my greatest strengths, which makes being a part of the Dramatists Guild Foundation's first virtual national fellowship a great way to spend time in the first years of my retirement.
