Artistic Statement
While my work may consist of talking bingo chips, a stuffed dog causing scandal or vegetables stealing soil, and each play stands on its own as entertainment, I also use my absurd or darkly humorous writing to promote discussion and thought on relevant human relationships. I don't write overtly "political" plays, but I find it exciting to write allegorically, allowing audiences to laugh or cringe at something which seems far from our reality, and then later reflect on and interpret its relevancy.
Aesthetically, I relish the humor found in dark situations and the gravity found in the frivolous, leading much of my work to have an absurd or darkly comedic bent. Isolation, obsession and cruelty, as well as self-sacrifice and hope, are often found in my high stakes dark comedies.
While enjoying dark comedies and absurd ideas, I also write poignantly dramatic plays--whether it be about the tragedies of the human trafficking criminal industry, the strong connection between John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, or a newlywed's fear of having a child.
Whatever my subject or style, my plays are passionate, unique and truly belong on the stage.
